Not every photographer wants a brand that feels “luxury,” right? Some want to have brands filled with personality, humor, and fun (which we are HERE for)! If your brand thrives on not taking itself too seriously (while still delivering killer results), you might be rocking the Jester archetype.

As brand designers for photographers, we work with each of our clients to help them build a unique brand that makes them magnetic to their dream clients. To achieve this, we always start by giving each client a brand archetype. We can’t stress enough the importance of having a distinct archetype  – it will be truly transformative for your brand and business.

Read on to learn more about the Jester brand archetype! Plus, discover how to make your own Jester brand as a photographer.

Jester Brand Archetype Examples in Photography

Some photography niches where it’s common to see the Jester style are:

  • Brand photographers who infuse energy and hype into every shoot
  • Family photographers who take chaotic moments and make them feel comedic to make sessions fun for kids and adults
  • Lifestyle or boudoir photographers who help clients loosen up and feel celebrated
  • Photographers who focus on unconventional couples, themed shoots, or fun editorial sessions

These brands share similar traits that are typically built on humor, pop culture references, memes, sass, or surprise to stand out. The Jester archetype brand values joy, expression, fun, and comfort over perfection, with a vibe that is “real, relatable, and kind of ridiculous but in the best way.”

So what does this look like visually? Well, it could look like bright, bold color palettes, playful fonts and layouts, patterns, movement, and a variety of unexpected design elements. You’ll also often see messaging that embodies a conversational tone, inside jokes, light profanity (if aligned), and “don’t take yourself too seriously” vibes.

These brands truly make their clients feel celebrated, relaxed, and part of something fun!

How to Build Your Own Jester Brand as a Photographer

If you know that you want to build your brand around the Jester brand archetype, here are our pro tips on how to do it:

Start with personality

When it comes to building your brand, your foundation should always start with your values. What lights you up? What do you want clients to feel during your sessions?

For the Jester brand, try to focus on joy, comfort, humor, boldness, and anti-perfectionism to build a connection and resonate with your ideal clients.

Visual identity

Your visual identity should be fun but not too much (a hard balance, we know)! You can

use bold colors, surprising layouts, and maybe even hand-drawn or illustrated elements. Also, try and avoid overly minimal or moody aesthetics unless you’re intentionally mixing tones/archetypes.

Messaging

Your messaging will also be a secret weapon. Write like you talk. Break grammar rules if it’s on-brand. Drop the formalities! Incorporate humor, pop culture, metaphors, or unexpected analogies. When in doubt, always work with a copywriter!

The client experience

Don’t overlook the importance of the client experience. Your client experience should be relaxed, upbeat, and memorable, from your booking flow to your gallery delivery, and don’t forget to infuse your unique personality into every step.

Surprise elements

Try out including fun surprise elements like GIFs, playlists, memes, welcome kits, etc, to really make your brand and business stand out!

Be yourself

Don’t fall into the trap of trying to be everything to everyone. Jester brands work best when they’re unapologetically themselves.
