Most photographers already know that they need a scroll-stopping website, but did you know that’s only half the equation? The truth is that you need more than just a great website; you also need a strong brand. Web design and branding aren’t interchangeable, which is where many photographers often get confused.

As brand and web designers for wedding pros, we’ve seen it time and time again where incredible photographers have a beautiful website, but their branding and messaging aren’t clear, and that’s where the conversation with their dream clients stalls out.

Read on to learn more about the difference between web design and branding, why they both matter for photographers, and how we at Inkpot Creative bring them seamlessly together.

What Is Branding?

First, let’s talk allll about branding and what it is. Branding is how people feel about your business – it’s the vibe of your business, not just your visuals.

Here are the core elements you need to make your branding exceptional (and memorable):

  • A brand strategy (these are your values and your vision)
  • A clear visual identity (this includes your logos, color palette, fonts, and patterns)
  • Powerful messaging (your tone of voice, tagline, and brand story)

If you’re a photographer, you definitely need to have a solid visual identity with a touch of brand strategy. What we mean by this is that your visual identity actually connects with who you want to work with. Also, when it comes to brand messaging, we encourage you to work with a copywriter to help you with this part. Trust us – it’s going to make everything much easier for you if you do!

What Is Web Design?

Web design is the structure and experience of your online home. Your web design is where your branding and the creative direction of your brand come to life.

A top-tier website has the following:

  • A clear site layout and easy navigation
  • A great user experience (UX) and functionality
  • Conveys the visual translation of your brand (fonts, colors, images)

We see many photographers choose to DIY their website, and while there’s nothing wrong with DIY, saying that you have a website that just consists of your portfolio on the homepage with a contact form is such a disservice to your incredible work.

If you want users to land on your website and say, “I need to book you right now,” you need a website that’s more than just a homepage with a gallery of your best work. What you actually need is a website that is persuasive, scroll-stopping, and strategic.

Web Design vs. Branding (& Why They’re Not the Same)

Let’s clear up the difference between web design and branding – branding informs web design, not the other way around. Your branding should ALWAYS come first. On the other hand, web design brings your brand to life in a way that’s functional, interactive, and intuitive.

For you travelers reading this, branding is the boarding pass, and web design is the plane that takes you there. One gets you ready while the other takes you places and puts the boarding pass to use!

The bottom line is that you can have a beautiful website, but if your branding and messaging aren’t clear, it won’t convert. What you need is both to make an equally strong (and lasting) impression.

Here’s a real-world example for photographers: Your brand values might center around authenticity, intimacy, and inclusivity, and that can come through your brand colors, typography, and logo. Your website design then supports those values by utilizing those warm colors, easy navigation, and inclusive imagery.

Why Photographers Need Both Branding and Web Design

It’s worth knowing that couples and clients aren’t booking you because your homepage is pretty – they are booking you because your brand connects with them. Remember, good branding makes your web design work harder (and smarter).

Keep in mind that you only have a few seconds to make an unforgettable first impression with new leads. Chances are, they are clicking from Instagram or Pinterest, so time is of the essence! If you have both branding and web design, you are increasing your chances of turning a curious user into your next client.

  • You cringe when someone asks what your brand is about

You might need web design if:

  • Your current site is hard to update or navigate
  • You cringe when you have to send someone your website link
