Many photographers still assume blogs are only for sharing galleries, but they’re actually one of the most powerful marketing tools available. A blog can help photographers like you get found on Google, attract local clients, showcase your work, answer client questions, and build trust before someone ever inquires.
Let’s dive into why you should start blogging!

Does My Photography Business Need a Blog?
The short answer: yes! Blogging is one of the few marketing tools that continues working after you hit publish. Unlike social media posts that disappear after a few days, blog posts can generate traffic for months or years. Simply put, a blog gives you more opportunities to be discovered online.
A Blog Helps Photographers Show Up on Google
Every blog post you publish creates another opportunity for you to rank in search results because search engines rely on written content to understand what your website is about. The more relevant content you publish means more opportunities to appear in searches.
You can create blog content around exactly what potential clients are searching for. This could be things like:
- Best wedding venues in [city]
- Best engagement photo locations in [city]
- How much does a wedding photographer cost?
- What should I wear for family photos?
- When should I book a wedding photographer?
This is great because instead of interrupting people with marketing, you’re showing up right when they’re already looking for answers.
A Blog Helps You Target Local SEO
Local clients are already searching for local information, and as most photographers serve specific cities, states, or regions, this helps you show up in their search results. Blogging helps reinforce your location and expertise!
Blog topics that support local SEO are things like:
- Venue features.
- Location guides.
- City-specific photography tips.
- Local vendor recommendations.
- Session location roundups.
This type of content helps Google understand where you work. It also makes it easier for local clients to discover your business and can increase visibility for location-based searches.
A Blog Gives You a Place to Showcase Your Work
On your website, your portfolio showcases your best work and is a curated collection of your favorite images. However, your website visitors often only view a small percentage of your galleries. But… blog posts tell the full story.
Your blogs:
- Showcase complete weddings and sessions.
- Highlight specific venues and locations.
- Share client experiences.
This helps potential clients envision themselves working with you, see behind the scenes of your process, and creates more trust than a few portfolio images alone.
A Blog Answers Questions Before Clients Even Ask Them
Let’s be honest – most photographers answer the same questions repeatedly. Typically these questions are:
- What should we wear?
- When should we book?
- How long should our timeline be?
- Do we need a second photographer?
- What happens if it rains?
Which is why we recommend turning those commonly asked questions into blog posts!
These posts:
- Create helpful resources for clients.
- Save you time during the inquiry process.
- Improve your overall client experience.
A Blog Helps You Build Trust and Authority
People want to hire photographers they trust and who they believe will do a good job. Photography is a significant investment and clients often spend weeks or months researching before reaching out.
Blogging demonstrates your expertise and sets you apart by:
- Showing that you understand your industry.
- Demonstrating your experience.
- Providing value before a sale happens.
A Blog Supports Every Other Marketing Channel
One blog post can become dozens of pieces of content such as:
- Instagram captions.
- Reels topics.
- Pinterest pins.
- Email newsletters.
- Threads posts.
- FAQ resources.
Blogs can actually make your marketing way easier and can give you post ideas when you have no idea what to post or what to send to your email list.

Your FAQ’s About Blogging Answered
Here are the most common questions we get about blogging:
How many blogs do I need to have?
Our answer: as many as possible. The best results from blogging come from consistency and quality. You don’t have to publish 4 blogs a month – what matters more is the quality of the blogs and not publishing a blog and then going months without publishing another one.
How long does it take to see results from blogging?
The answer truly varies. If someone is promising you specific results from blogging, this is a red flag. Blogging doesn’t guarantee results, but many of our blogging clients have started seeing an increase in traffic and even bookings around 3-6 months of consistent blogging. After 6 months of blogging, many of our clients hold #1 rankings, resulting in hundreds of clicks to just a single blog post alone. While we can’t guarantee results, we do know how to write blog posts that will get you more visible. We also analyze the monthly reports to help create a plan for what’s working and what’s not, so you’re getting the best possible results with this offer. Remember, results from blogging are not something that happens overnight.
What’s the best platform to start a blog on?
There are many different platforms you can use to get started blogging, but we highly recommend Showit and WordPress. You can also use Squarespace for blogging. The most important thing is that you start your blog on a platform where you own your website so that you also own your blog.
What tool should I use for keyword research for blogging?
There are a lot of different keyword research tools that exist. For us and for our clients, we use Keysearch. We like it because it’s affordable and comprehensive. We don’t recommend using AI to do your keyword research for you, as the results are often inaccurate.

Ready to Start Blogging for Your Business?
If you’re asking, “Does my business need a blog?” the answer is almost certainly yes! The biggest benefits to blogging are improved SEO, local visibility, opportunities to showcase your work, answering client questions, and building trust.
Blogging is all about creating content that helps potential clients find, trust, and book you. It’s time to start treating your blog as a marketing tool rather than an afterthought. Blogging is still one of the best ways to drive traffic to your website (and the type of traffic that you actually want). Unlike social media, blogs don’t disappear; they compound over time, and they support your entire website. Your blogs will bring to your website users who are looking for answers to their questions that you can provide.
