Whether you are just starting out on your blogging journey or have been blogging for a while, you’ve probably asked yourself, “How often should I blog for SEO?”. Blogs can help boost your traffic and continue to get you leads long-term, but you want to make sure you are blogging in an effective way.
As long-time bloggers ourselves, we’ve had a lot of time to test out different theories when it comes to blogging and what is actually successful.
So, let’s dive into our answer to “How often should I blog for SEO?”.
How Often Should You Blog?
When it comes to this question, there is honestly no right answer or set amount that you need to write each month to be successful. In general, we suggest writing at least 2 posts a month; however, the more content you can get out there, the better.
The most important thing, though, is that each and every post you write and publish is SEO optimized. You can write 40 posts in one month, but if they are not optimized or aren’t using keywords that people are searching for (and that you can actually rank for).
A few well-written and optimized posts a month are going to do way more for you and your traffic than a ton of unoptimized content. Quality is definitely king over quantity here.
While two posts are the minimum that we would suggest writing each month, the more quality posts you can publish, the better. Every time you publish a new post, it is creating a new page on your site and a new avenue that potential clients or customers can find you.
Blog post keywords are also very specific, which can play to your advantage. For instance, you may have keywords on your site that target “Las Vegas Wedding Photographer,” but not everyone getting married in Vegas may necessarily search that.
However, if you have a post on “The best places to get married in Vegas,” you can answer a specific question that people are searching for, and after getting the information from your site, you can add links to your services or contact page, and they may end up booking you from that post.
There is an endless amount of content that you can post, so you will never run out of ideas for your site.
Should You Schedule Blog Posts?
Whether you should or shouldn’t schedule blog posts is a question you have probably asked yourself. There are a lot of people out there who will tell you you should and others who say no. Let’s take a look at what this actually is and our advice on scheduling vs not scheduling.
What is blog scheduling?
Blog scheduling is exactly what it sounds like: scheduling your blog posts to go out at a specific date and time. Most blogging platforms will allow you to do this so you can upload your posts, and they will go live whenever you want them to.
For a while, this was something that bloggers did so that Google would learn when they were posting and index their posts faster. For instance, if you always posted on Wednesday, the idea was that Google would learn that and expect a new post from you every Wednesday.
However, that is a thing of the past and isn’t something you need to take into account today.
Times when you should schedule posts
While we don’t always schedule posts when it comes to our own content, there are times when we do suggest scheduling.
If you need a consistent schedule for marketing
If you do have a marketing schedule that you need to follow or batch all of your social media content for the month at one time, etc., scheduling your blog posts may be a good idea. This way, you know when each and every post is going to go out and when you will be able to post about it on social media, send it to your newsletter, etc.
We also find that it can sometimes be helpful if you are working with a team. Having a consistent posting schedule can help keep everyone on the same page and make sure that all of the right content is going out at the right time.
We do also schedule posts for the clients that we write for. This helps them know when they can promote the post ahead of time so they can plan their content around their blogging schedule.
If it is going to help you stay on track
Another great reason to schedule blog posts is to help you stay on track. If you are someone who needs to pick a date and say to yourself, “I am going to write my posts on this date, and it is going to be published on that date,” and that helps you to consistently post, absolutely do it.
Again, getting quality content on your site is the most important thing, so if a consistent posting schedule is going to help you achieve that, scheduling is a great option.
Why not to schedule posts and always automatically publish them
While there are a few reasons why we would suggest scheduling posts, most of the time, we don’t.
The main reason we don’t personally schedule posts for our own sites is that it delays the post from ranking.
Say you write 5 posts in a day and have them scheduled to post once a week. By the time that fifth post is uploaded, it has just been sitting in your blog editor unpublished for over a month. That is time where it could have been indexed by Google and climbing the rankings.
The sooner you can get content out there, the sooner it can start to rank, which is the ultimate goal. This may mean that some weeks you have two or three or even five posts go out, and some weeks you have none…and that’s okay.
As we said earlier, the more quality content you can put out there, the better. If you are posting 8 articles in a month, it doesn’t matter if you post two a week or if you post all of them on the same day. They are still all being published, so why hold onto them?
