In a world dominated by social media and video content (even I’m known to scroll TikTok accidentally for hours), you might wonder: do people still read blogs?
For photographers, especially, where visuals often do the talking, it’s a valid question. The answer, though, is a resounding yes. People still read blogs, and they remain a powerful tool for attracting clients, building your brand, and growing your online presence.
At Inkpot Creative®, we write blogs for photographers monthly inside Back Pocket Blogger, and our clients are 100% proof that people are still reading posts.
Let’s explore why blogs are still relevant, how they benefit photographers, and what makes a blog worth reading in today’s digital landscape.
Blogs Are Still Relevant. Here’s Why.
Blogs Are Evergreen Content
While Instagram posts or TikTok videos may fade away into the social media abyss within a few hours, blog posts have staying power. A well-written blog can continue to drive traffic to your website months or even years after it’s published.
In fact, this article on website launch announcement ideas that I wrote way back in 2022 is still in our top 3 most popular articles on our site, continuing to get traffic for Inkpot’s website. At the time of writing this article, it’s been up for 2.5 years!
People Seek In-Depth Information
When planning a wedding, a family photoshoot, or an engagement session, potential clients often want more than just inspiration, they want answers.
Blogs provide the space to dive deep into topics like “How to Prepare for Your Wedding Photos” or “Top 5 Family Photo Locations in Las Vegas,” giving readers the information they’re looking for. Blogs also tend to be a bit more personal in a sense than other content because you can easily add your own thoughts and opinions throughout the post, showing your experience firsthand.
Blogs Build Trust
Sharing your expertise through blog posts positions you as an authority in your field. For photographers, blogs can showcase not just your work, but also your knowledge and experience, helping potential clients feel confident about choosing you.
They Boost SEO
Blogging is one of the most effective ways to improve your search engine rankings. When you create blog posts optimized for keywords like “best wedding photographer in Austin” or “tips for outdoor engagement photos,” you increase your chances of being found by clients searching for those terms.
That’s because every single article you write is essentially another blog post on your site, giving another avenue for people to find you!
Why Blogs Work for Photographers
So, now that you know why blogs are still relevant, let’s talk about why they work for photographers.
They Showcase Your Expertise
Just like I mentioned earlier, blogs give you a platform to share your unique perspective, style, and approach to photography. For example:
- Write about the magic of golden hour sessions.
- Explain the benefits of hiring a professional photographer versus relying on a friend.
- Share behind-the-scenes stories of how you photograph those perfect moments.
They Connect You with Your Ideal Clients
By writing about topics your ideal clients care about, you attract the people who are most likely to book you. For example, if you specialize in elopements, a post like “5 Best Places to Elope in Colorado” can get you traffic from people specifically looking to elope in Colorado. Pretty cool, right?
The way to do this is by using proper keywords, using a tool like Keysearch.
They Drive Traffic to Your Website
Each blog post is an opportunity to bring new visitors to your site. Once they’re there, they can explore your portfolio, learn about your services, and take the next step toward booking you.
Even if the person visiting your site doesn’t actually inquire to work with you, you can try to keep them in your business’s orbit, by growing your email list with relevant freebies like the one below. (See what I did there?)
They Complement Your Visual Content
As a photographer, your images are your superpower, right? You know that better than anyone. Blogs let you pair your visuals with storytelling, giving clients a fuller picture of what working with you is like.
However, try not to fall for putting too many photos. This is one of the biggest mistakes we see!
Instead, focus on creating content that answers the search query while adding visuals to what you’re saying with your imagery. We recommend no more than a 6-photo gallery per heading. Often, no more than 30 photos in an entire post. (Try to refrain from posting your entire gallery!)
What Makes a Blog Worth Reading?
To keep people coming back to your blog, focus on creating content that’s engaging, valuable, and authentic. Here’s some tips on how to do that!
Focus on Your Readers
Write with your ideal client in mind. Think about their questions, pain points, and dreams. For example:
- “How to Choose the Right Wedding Photographer for Your Big Day”
- “5 Tips for Stress-Free Family Photos”
- “The Ultimate Guide to Planning Your Engagement Session”
Again, keyword research is really going to help you out here because you can look up different terms and see if people are actually searching for them.
Make It Personal
Let your personality come through in your writing. Share your experiences, tell stories, and let readers get to know the person behind the camera.
While your entire article shouldn’t be incredibly personal, you can add little bits of your personality and experience throughout.
As an example, you can see some of my personality come through in this article (I love sharing it via parentheses but I know that’s not for everybody) and I also let everyone know my experience at Inkpot right in the beginning of the article.
Pair Visuals with Your Posts
Use your best photos to illustrate your points and keep readers engaged. Include captions or short descriptions to give context to your images if needed, but there’s no need to go overboard.
If you’re writing about a specific venue, if you have a photo, put a photo of that venue with it. If you’re talking about a certain moment during a wedding, find a photo of that specific moment. See where we’re going here?
Write Captivating Headlines
Your headline is the first thing people see. Make it clear, engaging, and specific. For example:
- “10 Questions to Ask Before Booking Your Wedding Photographer”
- “What to do with Your Wedding Photos After You Receive Them”
Provide Value
Readers should leave your blog feeling like they learned something useful or gained a new perspective. Offer actionable tips, insights, or inspiration.
Bullet points (like the ones I used throughout this article) can often help with that.
So… do people still read blogs?
Yes, people still read blogs, especially when they’re looking for valuable information, inspiration, or answers to their questions. For photographers, blogging is a way to showcase your expertise, connect with your ideal clients, and build trust.
By creating content that connects with your audience and promoting it effectively, your blog can become a cornerstone of your photography business’s success. So, grab your favorite coffee, open up your laptop, and start writing. Your future clients are waiting to read what you have to say.
