As a brand and web design agency for photographers, one of the most common questions we get from photographers in the middle of a rebrand project is, “How many blog posts should I have before I launch?”

And our short, honest answer is this: you actually don’t need any blog posts to launch your photography website!

Despite what the internet loves to say, your site does not need to be perfectly content-packed before it goes live. What we’ve observed is that when photographers decide to wait until they have multiple posts written, they end up delaying their launch indefinitely (which is the EXACT opposite of what we want to happen)!

Let’s dive into more about why you don’t need a full blog before you launch, and when exactly the perfect time is to strategically add blogging into your overall marketing strategy.

Myth Busting: You Need a Full Blog Before You Can Launch

Somewhere along the way, photographers were told they needed at least 5–10 blog posts before launching a rebrand. However, this is NOT a launch requirement.

So what actually matters when it comes to your website launch? What matters is that your website clearly explains what you do, shows your work, tells visitors who you provide services for, and makes it easy to inquire. That’s it!

Your homepage, services, about, portfolio, and contact pages do far more heavy lifting at launch than a blog can.

Why Waiting on Blog Posts Delays So Many Launches

 Photographers often delay launching because:

  • They feel pressure to write “enough” posts
  • They want the blog to be perfect
  • They don’t like that their blog is filled with old content
  • They’re stuck deciding what to write first
  • They think launching without blogs is a mistake

In reality, the bigger mistake is keeping your site offline while you wait because the truth is that an unlaunched site can’t bring in inquiries…

Do Blog Posts Help Long-Term? Yes. Are They Required to Launch Your Photography Website? No.

Blogging is powerful, but it’s not a prerequisite for launching.

Blogs help you with:

  • Long-term SEO
  • Website traffic over time
  • Answering client questions
  • Building authority and trust

But all of that happens AFTER your site exists because you simply can’t optimize content for a site that isn’t live!

If You Want Blog Posts at Launch, Keep It Simple

If it makes you feel better to have something live, that’s totally fine. You don’t need a full content library… trust us, a few posts are more than enough.

A realistic launch-friendly blog plan is to have:

  • One educational or prep post
  • One recent session or wedding
  • One location-based or service post

Remember, even one or two posts are perfectly acceptable.

Launch First, Then Build Your Blog Strategically

The best tried and true approach for most photographers when it comes to launching is to:

  • Launch your website
  • Make sure your core pages are strong
  • Then start adding blog posts consistently over time

This takes the pressure off and lets blogging work the way it’s supposed to, gradually and sustainably, and just so you know, Google does not penalize you for launching without a blog!

Ready to Start Getting More Organic Traffic to Your New Photography Website?

The bottom line – you do not need a full blog to launch your photography website! What you do need is a clear, functional site that reflects your work and makes it easy for the right people to reach out. Don’t let the lack of blogs hold you back!

Once you’ve officially launched your website, it’s time to start blogging! Blogging is still one of the best ways to drive traffic to your website (and the type of traffic that you actually want). Unlike social media, blogs don’t disappear; they compound over time, and they support your entire website. Your blogs will bring to your website users who are looking for answers to their questions that you can provide.

And if blogging feels overwhelming or keeps becoming the reason you delay, you don’t have to tackle it alone.

Back Pocket Blogger is our done-for-you blogging service for photographers who want to rank on Google and book clients without ever writing another post on their own. You can learn more about Back Pocket Blogger right here!
